WASTE WARRIORS: EDUCATION PROGRAM

Upcycled is offering a FREE educational program to educate our youth about the effects of plastic and how recycling benefits our watershed through hands-on learning. The courses were planned to support the core curriculum taught in high schools based on the NGSS standards.

  • Programs will be held at Schools, Community Centers, Parks, Freetown Farm and our facility in Clarksville

  • The courses take 2.5-3 hours and will be offered in a 1 or 3 day format on a weekday or weekend

  • Programs are organized with a Green Teams teacher at a HCPSS, Parks and Recreation, or the Community Ecology Institute

COURSE DESCRIPTION

LESSON 1 - INTRO TO PLASTIC

NGSS Standard: Analyzing and Interpreting Data (Practice) - Life Sciences (Discipline) - Stability & Change (Crosscutting Concept)

Activities: Trail Cleanup and/or build a Terrarium and listen to a story about how Upcycled was started!

LESSON 2 - UPCYCLING CRAFTS

NGSS Standard: Developing and Using Models (Practice) - Physical Science (Discipline) - Energy & Matter (Crosscutting Concept)

Activities: Creating a mosaic and bracelets with “upcycled” beads and recycled bottles!

LESSON 3 - BUILD A STRUCTURE

NGSS Standard: Constructing Explanations & Designing Solutions (Practice) - Engineering Technology & Apps of Science (Discipline) - Influence of Engineering on Society & the Natural World (Crosscutting Concept)

Activities: Build a bench from “upcycled” lumber!
